May 3, 1944 - December 20, 2023
Born in Suva, Fiji, Urmila Prasad was raised in Rakiraki. In 1980, her mother and daughter moved to America. On a leap year, Urmila and her family joined them in Seaside, California, making the move on February 29, 1984.
It didn’t take long for Urmila to build up a community based around the Hindu faith, the Fijian culture and of course family which was not limited to only blood relatives but all who knew her.
Urmila passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and friends and is survived by her husband Sarda Prasad, children, Shashi, Daniel, Doreen, Nitant, Prashant; her grandchildren Aaliyah and Tiffany; great grandchildren; as well as her siblings and their families.
Urmila was a dedicated and very loving mother, not only to her own children, but many others who considered her like “a mother” to them. She was known for her cooking, her laughter and her enduring dedication to her religion. But what Urmila was best known for, was her welcoming nature which saw her open both her heart and home to everyone - all were welcome.
She was and will continue to be a shining light in all of the lives of the people lucky enough to have met her and will be deeply missed.
A funeral service to celebrate Urmila's life will be held on Wednesday, December 27, at 10 am at Bayside Community Mortuary, Seaside, California. All who knew Urmila are invited to attend. The service will be followed by a cremation service at Monterey Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for their incredible patience, care, and support during Urmila's final days.
