

Mern was born May 18, 1925 to Edith and Haakon Hegge at their farmhouse in Lake Stevens, WA. He passed away October 2, 2012.
He is survived by; his wife Betty of 61 years, his daughters; Karen White (Doug), Robin MacRae (Keith) his sons; Kevin and Keith Hegge, his grandchildren; Kendra Roettjer (Travis), Kelsey Sowders (Jake), Steven, Shannon and Alyssa MacRae, Kelsey, Joseph and Jacob Hegge, Dustin and Kari Hegge, his great-grandson; Grant Sowders, his only brother; Dean Hegge (Donna), his sister in law; Wilma MacLeod, his nieces; Kim and Judy MacLeod, his cousin; Doris Hegge Dalrymple, and several 2nd and 3rd cousins.
Mern graduated from Lake Stevens High School, Everett Junior College, and the University of Washington, with a Business degree in 1950.
Prior to college, Mern served in the U. S. Navy as a radioman on the USS Cape Esperance Escort Carrier, from 1943-1946. He survived Typhoon Cobra in the South Pacific in 1944. He was very proud to be an "American" and serve his country!
Mern worked in sales for Armour-Dial Company, retiring after 20 years. He then went to work 20 more years for Safeway Inc., and retired in 1990.
Mern loved his Norwegian heritage, and Betty's Scottish heritage. They were staunch supporters of both, and encouraged their kids to be involved. He was a Life Member of the Sons of Norway Normanna Lodge #3, A Life Member of the Seattle Elks Lodge # 92, and a long time member of the Seattle Scottish Highland Games Association.
Mern loved life, he loved his family, and he loved his friends. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service celebrating Mern's life will be held at the Sons of Norway Normanna Hall, on Friday Oct. 19th at 2:00pm 2725 Oakes Ave. Everett, WA
