Alvin Evald Backman, 78, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2019, at Hospice House in Tacoma after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Al was born on October 17, 1940, in Yakima, Washington to Elmer and Erma Backman. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1957, where he played trumpet in the marching band. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy. After his military service, Alvin went to work at Boeing. In 1964, he married Shirley Backman, the mother of his first son Brian. In addition to Boeing, Al worked for Lockheed, Bethlehem Steel, and the City of Seattle as a Metro bus driver. In 1974, he married Doris Solhaug. He and Doris shared 44 years together until Doris' death in 2018. Al is survived by his children Brian Backman, Kris Dugan, Teresa Olney, 4 grandchildren: Kyle, Heather, Samuel, Maxwell, and 3 great-grandchildren.
The Memorial Service for Alvin will be on Saturday, March 30th at 10:00 am at Highline Christian Church, 14859 1st Avenue South, Burien. Words of comfort may be expressed for Al's family by clicking on the Tributes tab just below his name.
