Al was born in Seattle to Alvin M. and Hazel C. Ulbrickson, grew up in the Laurelhurst neighborhood. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1948. Al continued his education at the University of Washington, graduating with the Class of ’52 earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. Al later completed his Masters in Public Administration. He was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, an accomplished oarsman and a member of the 1952 Summer Olympics Team where he and his teammates won a bronze medal. Both Al and his father were inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame.
Al served 2 years in the US Army before beginning his life of public service at the University of Washington as Assistant Dean of Men and later as Vice President of Student Affairs. After leaving UW, Al spent many years as the Executive Director of the South Snohomish County (Lynnwood) Chamber of Commerce. His community service included Kiwanis, Seattle Junior Crew and Community Services for the Blind. Al was recently honored with the dedication of a shell in his name by the Green Lake Crew for his role in promoting and strengthening the Junior Crew Rowing program.
Al resided on Orcas Island for the last 15 years. He is survived by his wife Monica; daughter Rinda; son Alvin; grandchildren AK, Adam, and Lindsay; and a loving step-family. Family, friends, and colleagues all remember Al for his engaging smile, great humor and genuine interest in the people he met. Everyone felt welcome in his company, he will be deeply missed.
