A steady anchor in our lives, he provided unwavering support and charity to all who knew him. Angel or better known as “Gil” in the Pinoy community enjoyed deeply socializing with his siblings, as well as with his close friends and family, creating cherished memories that will live on in our hearts.
Angel (pronounced “Ahn-hel”) was born the 8th of 10 children to the late Bonifacio Salangad and the late Antonia Salangad in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, Philippines. After 3 years attending the National Radio School And Institute of Technology (NRSIT) in Manila as a Radio Engineer major, he forwent his last year, and enlisted in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Army, to gain real-world Radio Operations experience instead.
In modern world terminology, Angel worked in the Intelligence community and served as the “eyes and ears” of the Philippines in Southeast Asia as he fondly loved to say. He was the attaché for the Embassy of the Philippines in Bangkok, Thailand, in the early 1960s. After 20+ years of loyal service to his country, he retired with a final rank of Master Sergeant.
In 1965, Angel fell in love with Lilia Queñano Solis, a schoolteacher. Together they had two children, Sherman and Mildred, and one granddaughter, Sierra.
He was petitioned to migrate to the United States by his wife Lilia in 1972. They settled in Seattle, and they have lived there exclusively for over 50 years.
He enjoyed visiting his siblings and friends in the United States and Canada, watching his favorite sports teams—the Seattle Seahawks, Supersonics, and Mariners—and embracing life in retirement. He traveled to his native Philippines and explored several countries, including Canada, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, and Israel, often for Catholic pilgrimages that deepened his faith alongside his loving wife, Lilia.
His charming smile, penchant for making people feel at ease and affable connection will be missed by many. We celebrate his life and the joy he brought to our lives.
