Ann Marie McNeal was born to Robert McNeal and Inga Jorgenson McNeal on January 10, 1930 in Seattle, WA. She was an only child. Ann Marie was raised in Seattle on Capitol Hill and Queen Anne Hill, graduating from Queen Anne High School. Her heritage as a Seattleite was highly valued and cherished. She always enjoyed time spent at Pike Place Market and on the Seattle Waterfront. She loved the history of Seattle and always enjoyed sharing it.
During her junior high years, Ann Marie’s mother became ill with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and died after a lengthy battle when Ann Marie was in high school. This, obviously, had a huge impact on her.
In her high school years, Ann Marie became good friends with Joyce Gazaway Glancy. Joyce’s dad made sure the girls had rides to and from the “King’s Teens” at Seattle First Free Methodist Church, and “Youth for Christ” meetings. Through these ministries she became a Christian. Ann Marie developed a close group of lifelong friends during these high school years.
She earned a teaching degree in June, 1953 from Seattle Pacific College. And, on June 30, 1954, Ann Marie married Wayne Eugene Mayhle. Wayne and Ann were active members of the Greenlake Free Methodist Church, now the Lakeview Free Methodist Church. They were busy members of the Friendship Sunday School class.
Ann Marie and Wayne were blessed with three children, JoyAnn (Steve Wise), Mary Jane (Dan Miller), and Robert (Emily Munson-Mayhle).
In their young married life, Ann was a substitute teacher, cleaned houses, took in ironing, and did other things to help the family. Her priority was to be home when the kids got home from school. She also taught Sunday School over the years.
Wayne and Ann lived in the same house most of their married life, and developed good friendships in that neighborhood.
In 1975, Ann Marie went to work at the University of Washington, in a housing office for young married students. She gained satisfaction in that job, and retired in 1996.
Ann Marie enjoyed lunches with high school and college friends. She liked going “thrifting” with her sister-in-law, Kathy Mayhle. She was artistic and refinished beautiful furniture. Sewing was a passion, and she sewed for her family. She also took much pleasure in doing many crafts. Camping with the Seman family was a highlight in the summer and her kids remember camping almost every weekend during the summer months. The family spent a lot of time in the trailer at Warm Beach Camp and Conference Center. Wayne and Ann donated a lot of time and energy at the camp.
Ann Marie is survived by her three children and her six grandchildren: Andrea Miller, Theresa Miller-Carlson (Elias Carlson), Mary Lute-Wise(Christo Lute-Wise), Ellen Wise, Sophie Wise, and Tucker Wise. There are also brothers-in-law: Marvin and Kathleen Mayhle, Bernard and Juanita Mayhle, and Norma Mayhle, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Ann Marie went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 25, 2012.
