August 20, 1946 – June 1, 2026
Art was born in Rockville Centre, NY, where his parents relocated during World War II, after having been interned for some time at the Minidoka Relocation Camp in Idaho. The family moved back to Seattle in 1947, and Art grew up in Pioneer Square, attending Bailey Gatzert Elementary School. A decade later the family moved to the Mt. Baker neighborhood where he graduated from Franklin High School. His education at the University of Washington was interrupted by service in the US Army. After discharge, he resumed his studies earning an accounting degree from the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. Upon graduation Art passed his CPA exam on his first attempt and began a 40 year career with the Internal Revenue Service.
Art’s first job as a paperboy for The Seattle Times led him to becoming a station manager, then to the overnight Circulation Desk at The Times. Later in college, he took a job at the AAA of Washington, handling overnight requests for service.
He was always a runner, from high school on, and ran in the earliest Seattle marathons annually. Deciding that running in Hawaii in early December was a better than running in Seattle in late November, Art switched to the Honolulu Marathon, which he ran for 30 years to the end of life.
Art was an avid Seahawk “Original 12”, traveling to New York for Super Bowl XLVIII. This was also his first visit to New York since his birth. Art, with family, witnessed the first Mariners game at the Kingdome as well as the first Mariners game at then SAFECO Field. He bowled for 20 years in a league with colleagues, and also golfed with them.
Art was an eager partner in Donnybrook Stable, raising and training thoroughbreds that raced primarily at Longacres and Emerald Downs. He was also an avid photographer, taking photos for the high school newspaper and annual and during his military service.
Art is survived by his sister Judy, brothers David and Paul, and nephews Donald and Joshua, as well as many cousins and their families. Although always quiet and shy, he faithfully loved and supported his extended family, colleagues and friends.
