
She was born in Arnes, Norway, March 9, 1909 to Anton and Louise Burklund and emigrated to the United States in 1912. Bertha graduated from Everett High School in 1925 and Bellingham Normal School in 1928. Prior to marrying Stuart B. Hertz in 1933 she taught elementary school in Greenbank and Lucia Falls, Washington. Bertha was an Everett Mountaineer and climbed many mountains with Stuart, including Mount Rainier twice. Bertha and her family were members of the Seattle Skating Club from 1947 to 1957 and she made many costumes for Seattle ice competitions and ice shows. She enjoyed family hikes, summers at the Burklund family cabin at Lake Stevens, loved to play cards and bowled women?s league into her seventies. Bertha was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to all who knew her.
Bertha was preceded in death by Stuart, husband of 52 years in 1985; her parents, sister Anne Raichle and brothers Roy and Frank Burklund. She is survived by sons David F. Sandy, John A. Ruth, and three grandchildren, Sheila Christian Chris, Brian Hertz Gwen Evans, and Michael Hertz Jordan; sister-in-law Thelma Burklund and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Graveside services for the family will be at Washelli Cemetery on Saturday, April 10 at 11 a.m. A celebration of Bertha's life for family and friends will also be on April 10 at noon in the Evergreen Washelli chapel, 11111 Aurora Avenue North, Seattle, WA.
