She is survived by her son Jay L. Oliver and nephew Stewart Winnie and niece Cherie. Also surviving her is her adopted family, honorary daughter, Merideth Minea and son-in-law, Michael Minea. Honorary grandchildren, Teighler Carrico, Makenna Minea, Kenny Minea and newest addition, great grandson, Lincoln.
Bette was a very organized and independent woman. Her Type A personality took her very far. She held positions as a supervisor in various jobs in the Tacoma and Seattle area. She worked as Fee Coordinator for both University of Washington’s Physician's Dept. and Seattle's Public Health Hospital. Probably her most memorable and favorite position was for Tacoma’s Public Library where she served as Secretary to the Librarian and oversaw many inner workings of the entire library system. But her favorite part was the weekly story hour she hosted for the children of several of Tacoma’s public schools.
Bette spent some time working for United Pacific (PAC-Med) insurance company as a supervisor and learned about insurance underwriting.
Bette never stopped learning; she received her Associate of Arts degree from North Seattle Community College in 1992 at the age of 59!
Bette had a strong sense of faith all her life. She was an active participant in her community and her church. She grew up Catholic and graduated from St. Leo’s in Tacoma in 1950. Later in life Bette joined the Protestant church for a time but it was with the Church of Latter Day Saints that she felt most at home. She met several life long friends there.
Those that knew Bette knew what a great sense of humor she had and what an amazing storyteller she was. She had a special place in her heart for all children and animals, she loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener. She was the type of person that could make a friend out of anyone she met. She will truly be missed.
There will be a small memorial service at her retirement villa, Cascadian Place in Everett on September 18, at 2pm.
