Betty Mae Barclay, born in Auburn, Washington. The daughter of Charles Paul and Hildur Pederson Barclay died peacefully with her husband of 65 years, James G. McCurdy, by her side after a short illness. Betty grew up in Auburn and Vancouver, before attending the University of Washington. She graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor's Degree from the School of Nursing and was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority.
She met her future husband through a blind date arranged by Thomas W. McCurdy, Jim's brother, in 1949. They married at the Mt. Baker Church in 1951 and resided in several different locations before settling in North Seattle.
Betty was a devoted supporter of the University of Washington, where she served as past president of the UW Alumni Association, and served on the Visiting Committee at the School of Nursing. She was a lifelong member of Minnie Fortson Kirk Seattle Children's Hospital Guild and Committee of 33. She was past president of the Sunset Club of Seattle, The Seattle Garden Club, and served on the Seattle Opera Board. She also served as president and board member of The Highlands, Inc.
A dedicated mother and wife she loved the arts, gardening and horticulture, history, travel, cooking and entertaining. She was an avid skier, tennis player and sailor.
In addition to her husband, she leaves behind her brother, Ronald L. Barclay, her three children and seven grandchildren; son, James W. McCurdy, (Brooke Kelly), Aslan Jane and Kate Winslow, son, Neil B. McCurdy, (Ann Corwin), Andrew Thomas, Kyle Corwin, and Ian Winslow, daughter, Margaret M. Williams, (John Becker Williams); Catharine McCurdy and Evan James.
A celebration of life service will be held January 10, 2017 at the Sunset Club, 1021 University Street, from 4-6pm.
