Björn Eric von Haartman passed away suddenly on June 1 after a 10 year heroic struggle with multiple serious ailments: cancer, COPD, pituitary brain tumor, diabetes and heart disease. He was almost 74 years old.
Eric was born at home on the island of Torö, Sweden, to Jan Eric and Boel von Haartman, and grew up in Nynäshamn, Sweden until the age of 13 when he moved to Seattle with his parents, younger sister and brother. Eric attended Jane Adams, Wilson and Hamilton Junior High Schools, Lincoln High School and Edison Technical School.
Eric joined the army and served three years, mostly in Germany driving trucks. While stationed in Germany he was also able to use his leave time to meet up with his family for a return visit to Sweden.
After returning from Germany Eric worked for a time fishing in Alaska but soon decided it was not for him and subsequently went into the construction business with his father and brother Bengt.
In 1975 he married Cathy Davidson and started a family that would eventually include two sons, Jon and Anders, and two daughters, Meggie and Kristina.
Throughout his life Eric enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, camping, saltwater fishing and foraging for wild mushrooms. As a transplanted Swede he especially relished catching and eating crayfish. Eric was also an excellent cook. He made his last trip back to Sweden and Finland with his two daughters in 2006, while his health was better.
He was much appreciated for his craftsmanship and hard work by both clients and co-workers. All who knew him also found him engaging for his sociability and quick wit.
Eric is mourned by his wife, Cathy, sons Jon and Anders, daughter, Meggie (husband Alan Balasundaram), grandson, Anders, daughter, Kristina, sister, Ingela von Haartman, brothers in Sweden and Finland, Bengt, Jan, and Lars with families, and nephews, nieces and cousins.
Services at Tahoma with military honors will be held on Monday, June 27, 2016 at 10:30 a.m.
