Chris Routos passed peacefully in the early morning hours of November 16, 2023. She was born on January 16, 1939, in Seattle, Washington to Stefanos and Kalliope Polenas. Chris grew up in Enumclaw, Washington with her sister, Becka and brother George. Chris is survived by her sons Gus and Stephen (Sarah); grandchildren, Michelle (Salvador), KC (Ryan), Danielle, Kallie, and Cole; great grandchildren, Madeline, Itzel, Salvador, and Alara; and sister, Becka.
Chris had a great love for the outdoors and cherished her years as a Campfire Girl. She also enjoyed playing tennis, swimming, and was an avid reader. From a young age, Chris was very sociable, and known as a friend to many. She spoke fondly of her early years, working as a lifeguard and alongside her dad at the family shoe store. After high school, Chris went on to the University of Oregon for one year before moving to Seattle to work for the Parks Department.
While attending services at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, she met Pete Routos. The two were married in 1961 and welcomed sons Gus and Stephen shortly thereafter. Chris dedicated her life to her kids and family. She loved taking them on adventures to the ocean at Moclips but said she had the best time of her life watching her boys play sports. The excitement and friendships she made along the way lasted a lifetime and you could always hear her voice on the crowd rooting the team on. When her boys were done playing, Chris was elated to watch her grandchildren play. During this time, she devoted herself to the St. Demetrios Greek Festival and worked for Pete at the Publix Café and other family bars. Chris then took a position at Pacific Coast Feather where she remained for 16 years before retiring.
Chris had many dear friends, a tribute to her unselfish disposition and willingness to help others. She was looked to as a source of advisement for her vast knowledge and compassionate heart. Chris always took the time to help others after retirement. Fond memories were made during Sunday dinners at Paul Mlachnik’s house, playing cards and games with her grandchildren, and other visits with friends and family. Chris was also in charge of her high school class reunion, which kept her in touch with all her longtime friends from school. In the last few years, Chris battled congestive heart failure and kidney disease, which limited her at times, however she still managed to attend family parties, holidays, and any other event she could go to.
In the hearts of those who knew her, Chris will forever be cherished as the beloved matriarch, a guiding light whose love and influence will continue to resonate through the generations of our family.
