Dennis was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Vincent James and Ruth Anderson Rothgaber.
A proud graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and Georgia Tech, Dennis went on to enlist in the United States Marine Corps in May 1962, and has fond memories of being stationed on St. Simon’s Island, Georgia. He served as a fighter pilot and decorated captain in an F8-Crusader squadron, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, five Air Medals, and additional campaign awards.
Upon leaving the military Dennis joined Caterpillar Inc. His 30+ year career with the company took him around the world travelling to many countries with memorable residencies in Hong Kong and Manila.
During his time living in Manila, Dennis met the love of his life, Boots (Paulita) Platon, on a layover in Bangkok (“Air France, Air Chance - haven’t flown it since.”). They married in Manila on September 23, 1974. Together, their family adventure began in Spokane, Washington and Dennis' career took their growing family from Pittsburg to Peoria, IL to Geneva, Switzerland andVancouver, B.C. and Calgary, Alberta.
A known jokester and a loyal, thoughtful, and dutiful family man and friend, Dennis was always up for a game of bridge, ping pong, or tennis. He relished this time of year for picking blackberries on his daily walks. Dennis’ genial nature and zest for fun made him a beloved grandfather and a favorite uncle.
Dennis was a devoted Catholic and lifelong volunteer, last based at St. Anne Parish in Seattle. He is survived by his wife, Boots, his three children, Amanda, Libby, and Andrew, seven grandchildren, many adoring nieces and nephews, and his sister, Milroy.
Preceding Dennis in death are his beloved parents, Ruth and Jim, and his beloved brothers Jim, Bob, and Paul.
A Catholic Mass will be held on August 10 at 10:30am at St. Anne Catholic Church, in Seattle.
In lieu of flowers, in Dennis’ memory, donations may be directed to Martha’s Workers at St. Anne Catholic Church.
