Age 82, died Wednesday, September 26, 2012. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on January 30, 1930, the son of John and Grace Newman. Living in Vancouver, Don had many jobs including working at the racetrack at Hastings Park mucking stalls and cooling horses. He had such an affinity with animals and wanted a horse of his own so much so that his folks moved out to Chilliwack, BC at age 15 just so they would have the room to keep one. Bonny was his first horse and then Broom along with numerous other “critters” and he took great joy in caring for them. He met and married his then wife Pearl and moved to the United States in 1954 and settled in Lynnwood, WA. They had three children: daughter, Gayle and two sons, Lee and Stuart. Stuart passed away in 2006. Don was a great husband and father and, as a family, they spent many years camping and traveling in the US and Canada. After moving to the states, he was trained as a dental technician and eventually had his own laboratory. He was in a car accident which ended his dental tech career after neck surgery. He was able to work in the men’s department at JC Penney where he met his present wife Donna McCarty and worked there until he retired in his 70’s. They shared the love of their little dog and faithful companion, Mosey. Don spent many years caring for his mother in her home and Don and Donna remained close, loving friends forever. Don was so unselfish and considerate of others and his life is woven into the fabric of a loving and colorful family history. He is survived by wife, Donna McCarty, daughter, Gayle Montoya and husband, David; son, Lee Newman and wife, Kim; grandchildren: Nicole, Scott, and Jared Sorensen and Lauren Newman; step-children, Keith and Kari; step-grandchildren, and a step-great-grandson. A memorial service will be held in Seattle at Blietz Funeral Home at 316 Florentia Street, Seattle, WA 98109 on October 10th at 10 AM for viewing and service at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to PAWS.
