Passed away peacefully from the affects of cancer on March 5, 2001. He was born in Ketchikan, Alaska on October 6, 1918, the son of Clarence and Mabel Payne. He attended schools in Alaska and Seattle and graduated from the U.W. where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the ROTC. In May of 1941 he was called in the Navy as an Ensign and stationed at Pearl Harbor. He served 4 ? years on the USS Hopkins, mine sweeper, where he eventually became a Lt. Commander and Captain of the ship. After leaving the Navy he returned to Ketchikan where he joined his father and brother Donald in the fishery business. When Alaska became a state they left the fishing business and the brothers operated General Automotive Warehouse Co. in Seattle. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Maxine; three sons that he greatly loved and was proud of, Stephen, Bradley, Gregory Payne; brother, Donald and many cousins. He was a much admired man and will be greatly missed. A funeral service will be held Monday, March 12, 2001 at 12:00PM at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
