Gong Shew Lock was born in Taishan, Guangdong, China in January of 1934 to Ning F. Lock and Gook Dip Lock. At the age of fifteen he departed China with his father and arrived in the United States in October of 1949. Gong was reunited with his mother and only brother, Douglas, in November of 1962 when they finally arrived in the United States from Hong Kong.
Gong attended Edison Vocational Technical Institute on Capitol Hill when Seattle Community College (now Seattle Central College) opened in 1966. He worked in the restaurant industry and was the owner of Ho Yuen in North Seattle for many years before retiring in 2007.
Gong always enjoyed returning to his village in Taishan to visit friends and relatives, and to pay respect to his ancestors. He also loved fishing, and once caught a 61 lb. King salmon while fishing on the Kenai River in Alaska in July of 1979.
Brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, friend, colleague. Gong Shew Lock was all of this and more to those whose lives he touched with his love and generosity. He loved his family and friends, always eager to share a table at his favorite restaurant, especially when his niece and nephews and their children were home for the holidays or family get-togethers. His other family were his friends and colleagues in the Soo Yuen Benevolent Association, of which he was a member for over 70 years. Today we honor Gong Shew Lock with deep gratitude and love for the impact he has had on our lives. He will be greatly missed, but forever in our hearts.
