31 December 1939 - 11 January 2022
Hanna Liv Mahlum was born to Egil and Astrid Harvold in Oslo, Norway on 31 December 1939. She met John Mahlum in 1961 aboard the ship Stavangerfjord when her family was returning from Toronto, Canada and John was en-route to Europe on a traveling scholarship to study architecture. After a yearlong transatlantic courtship, they were married the following summer in Oslo in 1962. They moved to New York City, where John completed his Masters Degree, and then spent two years in the Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, before settling in Seattle to be near John’s family. Liv and John raised three children, one daughter and two sons, in Magnolia and enjoyed summers on Crane Island in the San Juan Islands. They learned to sail and enjoyed sailing excursions up the Inside Passage and even one memorable trip through the Greek Islands. Liv earned a degree in accounting and worked as an accountant in her husband’s office for several years. Liv loved her family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them. She and John liked to travel and had many adventures together. She always enjoyed returning to Norway, going often to be with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, John Mahlum; her sister and brother-in law Ingunn & Kjell Nissen Meyer and their two sons, their wives and children of Norway; her brother Trygve Harvold of Norway; her daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Jaime Smith, and their two sons, Karl and Calvin Smith of Shaw Island; her son Paul Mahlum and husband Francisco Javier Soto of Seattle; and her son, Edward Mahlum and his three sons Nathaniel, Theodore and Phineas Mahlum of Seattle.
