Helen Elaine Kermoade (née Rutledge) passed away peacefully in her Fidalgo Island home on April 30th, 2021. Helen was born in Brock, Nebraska on May 1st, 1924 to Mary Eunice (McCorkle) and Everette George Rutledge Sr. She married family friend and U.S. Coast Guardsman Arthur L. Kermoade in 1944. The couple settled and raised their two children in Seattle. Helen worked as a secretary to the President of University of Washington before teaching kindergarten and first grade at Seattle’s Greenwood Elementary School. In 1984, Helen and Art retired to their double-A-frame cabin on Fidalgo Island. Helen was a founding member of the Washington Native Plant Society, Salal Chapter, and remained active with the Anacortes United Methodist Church through her early 90s. She loved driving, beachcombing, quilting and adventuring with her grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her sister, Marian Eunice Elwonger; daughter Sheryl Kermoade and husband, Dennis Krewson, and their sons Rob and Jay; son, Kerman, and his children: MacKenzie, Klaiten, and Margaret. She was preceded in death by husband Arthur and brothers Everette George Rutledge Jr. and Edgar Marvin Rutledge.
