Irma Emma Elizabeth (Gothberg) Johnson went to be with her Lord on February 14 at the age of 100. Irma was born to Fingal and Elizabeth Gothberg in Yakima, WA where she spent her childhood on the family's apple orchard. After graduation from high school, Irma worked for John Maloney, Architect for 26 years in Yakima and then Seattle.
In 1958, Irma married Winston Johnson. For over 49 years, Irma and Winston enjoyed an active life of service, travel, music, and time spent with family and friends. Irma was an exceptional seamstress, baker, and cook, known for her Scandinavian specialties. She was a model of hospitality and friendship. For over 25 years, Irma opened their Laurelhurst home to families having a child in treatment at Children's Hospital, freely providing a room, meals, and loving support.
When Irma and family members were meeting at the offices of Evergreen-Washelli shortly after Winston's death, one of the women employees came into the room and asked Irma, Are you Irma Johnson? After a pause she said, Twenty-seven years ago I stayed with you in your home while my daughter was in Children's Hospital. Later she added, You can't imagine how blessed we were, at such a difficult time in our lives, to be so well fed and cared for in a home where the Lord was loved and so clearly present.
A long-time member of Seattle First Covenant Church, Irma was also active at University Presbyterian Church where Winston was organist for over 30 years.
Irma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Winston (2008) and sisters Dagmar Dahlberg and Beatrice Wikstrom. She is survived by her brother Kermit Gothberg (Carol) of Yakima, five nieces, five nephews, a large extended family, and many friends.
Gifts in memory of Irma may be made to Union Gospel Mission, World Concern, World Vision, or a church or charity of your choice.
