Jack Arnold Grant was born on September 16, 1949 in Sundance, Wyoming. His parents were Ray Grant and Betty Branscom Grant. Jack’s early years were in Osage, Wyoming and Harrison, Idaho. Jack graduated from Kootenai High School in Harrison. He spent one year at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska. The second year he returned home and attended Spokane Community College. Jack’s sister, June and her husband, moved to Marysville, Washington and Jack decided to move there too. After a few different jobs in Everett and Seattle, Jack was hired at SeaLand Container Shipping Company in 1973. SeaLand was on the Seattle waterfront and later moved to Tacoma. SeaLand was sold to Horizon Lines. Jack retired from the company in 2010 after 37 years.
In 1976 Jack met his life partner Robert Connell and were together 48 years. Jack liked building things, a skill he learned from his father, a carpenter. Jack called himself a rough carpenter. He didn’t spend time on the small stuff. He wanted to see his vision created ASAP. Two large projects were a cabin at Lake Cushman, Washington that still stands today and a studio in the backyard of the Seattle House.
Jack liked cars. He owned at least 60 cars in his lifetime. When he died, he owned three cars, one truck, and one RV. He liked driving and every year he drove to Idaho or Wyoming. He also drove to Oregon and California regularly. In 2011 Jack and Rob bought a winter home in Desert Hot Springs, California, just 9 miles from Palm Springs. Jack knew how to enjoy life. Summers in Seattle and the Northwest and winters in the desert sun.
