     My first encounter with Jim was no more than six months removed from my high school graduation,   when I was hired into Carol Borrow's scheduling department(Nov. 1976) to deliver computer output to programmers at the home office of Safeco Insurance in Seattle. 
     Even though we worked in three separate department's within the company, two Jim's made me feel welcome, and "right at home", Brooks and Fleming. That meant a lot to a nineteen year old newcomer. 
     I will never forget the physical image of him at that time.....tall, ramrod straight in posture, and jet black hair.
     Very nice man, I thought!
     Years later, in the early-2000's, our paths would cross once again. My wife and I lived up and across the street from one another on 80th Ave. in Kenmore. The store that I worked at was no more than a eight minute walk from our locations. He would visit many times over a period of years.
     The conversation would ALWAYS center around his grandson, Aaron. He was so proud of Steve and Sue's son in his advancement, as a pitcher, in the Seattle Mariners baseball organization. From Everett(I saw him pitch once up there) to AA ball. You could tell by the tone of his voice and facial expressions!

When I reported for my first day of work at Safeco Insurance in 1957, one of the first people to greet me was Jim Brooks.    Jim and I became friends over the years until he moved on the greener pastures.  We stayed in contact, although certainly not as closely as when we worked side-by-side.  I had actually met Jim several years earlier when he came into my workplace (which was Barbara's place of work at the time, also.   

Jim's saddest time was when he lost Barbara.  The grief never left him.  He was a sadder man after her death.   Jim and I were not close in these later days, bu I still remember him as a happy person who was liked by everyone.   

  

I worked with Jim at Safeco in U district for several years.  A good man who made my employment enjoyable
