Jane Coffman Hoag

64, died Friday, September 28, 2001 at her home in Edmonds, Washington from complications of diabetes. Jane was born on August 7, 1937 in Walla Walla, Washington to Elgin and Alpha Aichele Coffman. She grew up on a wheat and pea farm in northeastern Oregon and loved the rolling hills of green and gold near Athena, Umatilla Co., Oregon. She graduated with a B.A. degree in education from Oregon State University, Corvallis in June 1959 and married Wendell Hoag at the Athena First Christian Church in August 1959. She was later divorced in 1987. Jane?s life-long career was teaching mathematics and assisting her students in the Seattle Public Schools. She taught for many years at Thompson Junior High School and later at Ballard High School. Among her thousands of students were her two daughters and stepson. Jane was a kind, generous, and patient friend, parent, and teacher, and she had a positive influence on her colleagues and students. The family expresses profound thanks to the many health care professionals who assisted Jane to live an independent life. Jane is survived by her father Elgin Coffman of Milton-Freewater, OR; daughter and daughter-in-law Samara Hoag and Jeanne Dorn of Seattle, WA; daughter and son-in-law Corolla Hoag and Kevin Horstman of Tucson, AZ; son and daughter-in-law Calyx and Barb Hoag of Bellingham, WA, and her beloved grandchildren Ann & April Jane, Sage Hoag of Bellingham. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Alpha Coffman and her sister, Jo Ann Ryan, both of Athena. All who knew her are invited to Jane?s memorial service at the Edmonds Public Library Edmonds Plaza Room, 650 Main Street on Thursday, October 11 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be given to the Kidney Auxiliary KAPS c/o Puget Sound Kidney Center, 21309 44th Ave W, Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043 425 744-1095.
