Born March 20, 1922 in Honolulu, Hawai’i and passed away on February 25, 2016 at the age of 93. World War II brought him to Fort Lewis where he met his wife of 59 years, Tokiko. John worked as a watchmaker early in his career and at Boeing for 25 years. He loved golfing, making a hole-in-one at Jefferson Park in the contest sponsored by the Western Washington Public Links and Seattle Post Intelligencer in 1966. Mushroom hunting and razor clam digging were regular family events. Later, he took up steelhead fishing until the idea of taking something that had migrated so far and struggled so hard to get home just didn’t sit well with him anymore. Pickleball, dancing and casinos rounded out his senior years after Toki died in 2005.
John is survived by his son Steven, and daughters Sharon (Michael Spence) and Stacie (John Conkle), his two granddaughters, Jennifer (Joshua Copland) and Emily (Bradley Smith), and one great-grandson, James. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Because of his deep affection for cats, memorials to the Humane Society for Seattle/King County.
