I remember my cousin John as a young boy. All of us were constantly going from the Moore's to the Masterson's to the Booth's houses (as well as many others) and we knew the neighborhood better than the adults! I also remember fondly all of the Mastersons and wish them all whatever peace they can find during this time of mourning. The importance of family is hard to overstate.

My sincere heartfelt condolences to Jahn's family and friends.  I only knew Jahn from our mutually practicing Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism as SGI members and sharing a few comments on Facebook, and yet I have been sending him prayers and will continue to for a beautiful rest and then a new birthday soon.

I am sorry for your loss. Loss is something I am all to familiar with at a young age of 25. Cherish those you love while you have them and remember a phone call, email or even a hand written letter is never a hard or difficult thing to manage. Love those while they are still in arms reach.

My favorite memories are of helping Johnny deliver his newspapers early in the morning when we were children. I wanted so much to stay in bed but somehow he always managed to get me to help him. We butted heads a lot, but I knew he loved me and I am deeply grateful to have been the one to hold him at the last. I will always hold  you John. I Love You so very much. Your little sister, Anne 

Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.


I met John many years ago when he had his shop in a building I manage. We hit it off right away. I enjoyed his free spirit and artistry. It was clear that he was more artist than businessman and was always involved in a lot of interesting endeavors. Over the years John did many sign jobs for us and we got to know each other better. I was happy to be able help him when we bought his property. I always looked forward to seeing him as the conversation quickly turned from signs and graphics to politics, religion, soccer, coffee or a host of other topics. He handled his illness with grace and dignity. I am sorry he's gone, but am sure his spirit will live on in a better place.

We express our condolences for the passing away of John who is a man of many great virtues.  We are truly appreciative for all he has done for society especially for the youth division.  He was instrumental in so many projects to help lift the spirit of the people and encourage them to move forward together.  We are sending love and good wishes to him and to the beautiful family that will carry on his great work.

I pray for your eternal rest and peace in GOD's heavenly kingdom. I remember you as my long haired uncle who had all that artwork in your small apartment here in Davenport. I believe you would admit you've had an interesting life that has spanned not only the years but also the hearts and minds of family, friends and others. 34 years of friendship is something I will never forget.  You helped me with my art gallery on Broadway for two years by making all my indoor and outdoor signage.  You and I participated in activities on behalf of the mystic law in many types of venues.  I introduced you to my wife's sister, Nga, and you brought into this world a beautiful Ajase whom I am so proud.  Your loving and giving heart will be missed so much.  Till we meet on Eagle peak.

Dear Uncle John:

I wish I would have had the opportunity to have known you better.  I was very young when you moved to Seattle.  Since I can remember, you have always been proud of me and encouraged me.  My chicken scratch drawings were works of art to you!  I can remember times when you would come to Davenport to visit and how excited I would get just to be able to see you!  Your hugs and SMILE were AWESOME!  You brought me a lot of joy especially during times when things seemed chaotic.  You were just such an incredibly kind man. 

I will never forget the conversations, discussions and disagreements we had.  Admittedly, there were many times I would get so frustrated.  You were strong in your beliefs and convictions and I in mine as well. We agreed to disagree...I wouldn't budge and you wouldn't either.  

Thank you for helping my friend Christine Graham-Henry.  Her Mom was diagnosed with MM and you graciously talked with Christine to help her through the initial diagnoses phase.  Christine thought very highly of you and was saddened upon learning of your death.  

John, I'm so glad that you were a part of my life and I will CHERISH the memories I have of you. I will miss you terribly!

Jahn, my buddha brother, we only knew each other for less than a year but you had a great impact in my life. Your wisdom and guidance added great value to my life and I will miss your wisdom, kindness and peaceful perspective. No doubt we'll meet again. 

As a friend of Jim's, he introduced me to Joe and Jahn via email.  I enjoyed the lively banter, and sometimes joined the fray. I also enjoyed Jahn's artwork, which Jim was very proud of.  My emails will be a lot more boring.  My deepest sympathy to the Masterson extended family.  My heart is with you as you suffer this loss.  My prayers are with all of you.  May your many memories of Jahn keep him in your hearts. He obviously enriched many lives, even those he never met in person.

John I will truly miss our conversations and the expressions of our different points of view; but it was always with love and we both knew it.  I admit that we always disageed, and although you chanted incessantly in the hope I would embrace Buddhism; well that was never going to happen.  I understand the day or two before you passed beyond the veil (A VanCamp Family expression) that you were wringing your hands trying to tell me I was wrong about something or other, according to sister Irene who simply told you to tell me I was right.  Well John, Irene gave you some good advice and you should have listened to her.  I don't know whatt it was that you were pondering when you told Irene: Darn it! He's not right and I can't say it in a single sentence back to Jimmy. Then you promptly fell asleep at the computer. John, you were an excellent writer and although I did not agree with your philosophy of Life, Religion and Politics, I respected you for your deeply held convictions and your ability to express them so well. John, you never wavered, but I was still right: So there.  I will miss you terribly.  I Love you John and wish I could have been there during your final moments. I will always have the fondest memories of you.

I am a friend of Jim's, but believe me met briefly on one of Jim's travels through the area. I enjoyed a shared meal and great conversation as you prepared to continue your journey to Gary. I have some very early memories of you of which I thought I had forgotten from both before and after you had moved to Seattle and of which I now cherish. We had lost contact until roughly 10 years ago, and have had many, MANY, discussions throughout these last 10 years. 

We would upset each other incessantly through these Emails, but I always felt that we both loved and cared for the other and I will truly miss that part of my life. 

I am both happy that you are now at peace, but yet I am selfishly sad that you are not here anymore for one more discussion.
