Jon Wayland Stewart, age 87, a resident of Bothell Washington, passed away peacefully at the Cambridge Adult Family Home in Kirkland Washington on Sunday July 21, 2019. Jon is preceded in death by his wife Virginia and is survived by his sons Brian and Colin, and his grandchildren Taylor and Katherine.
Jon was born to Clarice Haines and Roy Henderson Stewart on December 4, 1931 in Salem, Oregon. He spent his childhood years in Salem and Portland, then high school in Juneau Alaska before attending the University of Washington in Seattle. At the UW, Jon became a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, participated in the US Air Force ROTC and graduated in June 1954 with a degree in Communications & Journalism.
After university, Jon served in the US Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant at Lackland AFB in San Antonio Texas. After being discharged, Jon began his foreign studies by attending American Institute for Foreign Trade near Phoenix Arizona and soon thereafter went overseas to Lebanon and graduated with a Masters Degree in International Relations at the American University of Beirut while working as an editor for the country's only English language newspaper - The Daily Star.
Jon applied to join the US Information Agency (USIA) and while waiting to be accepted, lived and worked in New York City as a magazine editor for the Arab League mission to the United Nations. It was in New York where Jon met his wife Virginia ("Ginny") in late 1960, were married on December 15 1962 and they soon had their first son Brian in August 1963. Jon was accepted in to the USIA and the family's foreign service journey began that same year.
Ginny and Jon began their 25-year adventure overseas first in Syria, Egypt, and then in Lebanon where their son Colin was born in Beirut in November of 1967. After that, the Foreign Service took them to Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, back to Egypt and then to Pakistan, including one 4-year assignment in Washington DC. In 1989 Ginny and Jon moved to Seattle, Washington where they retired.
Jon is remembered as active, intellectually engaging, a loyal friend, and a loving father. Even after retirement - Jon loved to travel, stay in touch with family and friends from all over the world, and get outside to walk, play tennis, ride his bike, and enjoy the arts, cinema, and the symphony. He enriched all our lives with his friendship, care, and worldly knowledge. Jon is sorely missed by all who were close to him. Jon will be interred at the Evergreen-Washelli Columbarium in Seattle.
