Josephine Ingried Hautala
March 18, 1919 – December 30, 2018
Josephine (Neilsen) Hautala, 99, of Seattle, WA passed away on December 30, 2018.
She was born at home in Eatonville, WA on March 18, 1919 and considered herself very much a tomboy who loved living out in the country with her mother, father, and younger sister, Helen. Her name was Josephine but most called her Jo and some lovingly called her Joey.
Jo attended the University of Washington in the 1930’s and earned a degree in Physical Education and was an active member of the Newman Club.
She worked at the Boeing Company where she met Elmer Hautala. They were married at the St. Joseph’s Parish Rectory on September 6, 1943. They spent their married life living in South Seattle and building a home together for their family in the Shorewood neighborhood. It was there that Jo dedicated her “career” to being a home-maker and mother for so many more than just her immediate family.
Jo and Elmer were longtime parishioners of St. Bernadette in Burien where they had many dear friends, including Fr. Desmond McMahon whom Jo taught to swim! They celebrated both their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries there and were just months shy of their 70th when Elmer passed away in 2013.
Jo is survived by her daughter, Mary Mummert and her husband, Jack, her sons, John Hautala and his wife, Jennie, and Ray Hautala and his wife Diana; by grandchildren, Jeff, Joanna, Keith, Eric, Stephanie, Laura, and Kellie; and by great-grand-children, Adelaine, Alyssa, Jackson, Simon and 2 great-grand-daughters on the way.
A Rosary will be held at Yarington’s Funeral Home in White Center on Friday, January 18th at 4pm with an hour of reflection beginning at 3pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 19th at 1pm in the Chapel at Gethsemane Catholic Cemetery.

JO Hautala and I have been friends for many years and I was hoping to celebrate her 100th birthday with her. Unfortunately, she died eleven weeks before today's date of March 18, 2019. But I wanted to remember her today. In years gone by, JO and I and our husbands, Elmer and Dick, had many good times together. Elmo and Dick worked together and were friends as well as co-workers and when JO and I met, we also became good friends. So Happy 100th Birthday, JO!! I am thinking of you and missing you.
With My Love, Marian

So sorry to hear about Aunt Joey's passing. I remember her being cheerful and upbeat, with a smile on her face. She and Uncle Elmer were so helpful and caring to us. I hope that all your good memories will ease your loss.
