Born Julia May Akagi on May 5, 1925 in Lindsay, CA to Otoemon and Masano Akagi; passed away peacefully on December 2 in Kirkland, WA.
May lived in Lindsay until 1942 when the family voluntarily relocated to Parker, ID. After high school graduation in 1943, she moved to Salt Lake City, UT to attend LDS Business College where she earned a stenographic certificate. While working in Salt Lake City, she became interested in the medical field and started taking classes leading to a job as an Assistant Medical Record Librarian at St. Mark's Hospital. In 1950, May moved to Seattle, WA to further her education. After obtaining her medical record science certificate, she accepted a position heading the Medical Records department at an area hospital. May continued working at the hospital after marrying Hiroe Nagasawa on June 6, 1953. She later worked for HUD (Housing & Urban Development).
May led a very active, well-rounded life spending time with family and friends and participating in the arts and sports. She sang in her church choir and played the piano. As a life long sports enthusiast, May was skiing, golfing and playing tennis well after retirement. She was passionate about volunteering at the University of WA Medical Center and a nursing home guild. May said Helping others through volunteer services gives my life great meaning and joy. Volunteering, to me, is really not work. It's a hobby - a labor of love.
May has resided in the Seattle area with her beloved husband Hiroe for the past 61 years and will be missed by all.
