The world lost a beloved mother, Ka Lun Yuen, on Jan 20, 2021. Ka Lun died surrounded by family in Seattle, Washington. She is filled with love and blessings from family and friends who she had touched and loved throughout her life.
She was born in Guangzhou, China on June 19, 1949. She had a strong will and was full of spirits, which carried her through the challenging periods of the Cultural Revolution and forced farming in rural areas. She is a leader with compassion and many talents, and she made many life-long friends. She yearned for freedom and a better way of life, so she gambled and risked her life five times to escape mainland China. She also helped her siblings and friends to escape. In 1974, she finally succeeded and started her new life in Hong Kong. In the next 20 years, She built a successful career as an artist and children art teacher. She also started her own family. She said it was the happiest period of her life. However, she once again felt threatened with loss of freedom with the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997. She decided to bring her family over to America in 1993. She raised the two children mostly on her own while her husband worked overseas. She also pursued her childhood dream and received her bachelor degree in Arts at the age of 45. She achieved her goal while raising her children in a world of unfamiliar language, custom, and culture, and she was grateful and received love and support from her many friends in Seattle. Her passion for art, writing, and the love for children led her to publish various children's books, poems, and stories. During her spare time, she also enjoyed singing and playing chinese music instruments with her friends.
It would be wrong to say that Ka Lun lost her battle because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she was always determined. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. There was no quitting in Ka Lun. In the final years, she completed her autobiography titled “The Phoenix” and published numbers of Chinese opera performed by Chinese music instruments. She gave us all such courage and hope and reminded us of the preciousness of living in the United States.
