I began working for Kevin when I was 19, he had the largest impact on my life. I'll never forget him, and am very grateful to have known him. He had a huge heart, and was a great teacher. I'll miss listening to his crazy music and sad attempt to sing along!. He had a great sense of humor, which I still use some of his choice phrases!   

Karen I hope you find strength and courage during these times. To his parents, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

The number of lives one person can toucn is immense.  Kevin affected many people in business and pleasure.  He was a wonderful person and touched my life.  I'm going to miss him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I am a fraternity brother of Kevin's at the U of O in Sigma Nu.
I have many memories of Kevin. I regret that we lost touch these last 10+ years. I'm deeply saddened, & will miss Kevin's "spirit" and determination. No matter if you agreed with him or not today, you could always count on him and his friendship tomorrow. Whether it was hanging out in his room listening to Led Zeppelin & Little Feat -or- visiting him shortly after he moved to Seattle and watching his emotions go from despair to  joy as his Mets won the '86 World Series Thank you Bill Buckner - there will always be many great memories of Kevin. As I think someone said here earlier, there aren't enough Kevins in this world. He will be certainly missed.

I am so sorry to hear he is gone, I am glad to have had some time with him this past spring in Phoenix, espically at the ball games.

To Kevin's friends and family and Mary I offer my deepest condolences and sympathy.  What a tragedy to loose someone so young and full of vitality.  His love of life was only surpassed by his love for his children and Mary.  He was so proud of each of you.  You are all in my thoughts and prayers.


Everyone at WestAmerica was stunned to hear of Kevin's passing.  It seems like only yesterday he was filling in as our "fearless leader", when it was actually January through March of this year.  We were all crammed into our 4,000 sq. ft. temporary offices trying to function while feeling like mice in some mad scientist's experiment.  After three months in our cramped quarters, the lease for our new office was finally ready.  We decided we wanted to make a really big deal out of the signing of the lease, so Kevin went out and bought champagne glasses and champagne and not the cheap stuff either.  We gathered everyone in the conference room for a toast while I signed the lease.  One of the brokers even took the pen I used as a souvenir, as if it was the President signing in new legislation.  It was definately a morale booster.

Now we are in our new luxurious, spacious office starting a whole new chapter of WestAmerica's history.  Yesterday Shari stopped by my office with a very sad look on her face and told me she had just noticed Kevin's chapange glasses setting on the shelf in the kitchen cupboard.  That reminded me there was one bottle of champagne left over from our lease signing party.  So while those of you in Seattle were able to attend Kevin's proper services, we at WestAmerica paid our own tribute to Kevin by uncorking the left over bottle of champagne he had gotten for us.  Although our ceremony was unconventional, I hope you appreciate the spirit in which it was done.  I believe Kevin would have loved it.  We even poured a glass for Kevin.  We toasted Kevin with his champagne and shared our thoughts and memories of him.  While it was truly a sad occasion, there was also much laughter and joy as we remembered the times we had shared.  Kevin lives in the hearts and minds and memories of many.  May he rest in peace.

i would like to send my heartfelt sympathies to kevin's family and family to be.  i only knew kevin for the short period of time he was here in scottsdale, but genuinely enjoyed his quick wit, and attention to detail, and above all else i will not forget the way he expressed his love for mary and his children, and was so looking forward to his "to be" new nuclear family.  rest well, kevin.  you made the world a better place.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.  I was a fraternity brother and roomate with Kevin at the University Of Oregon in Sigma Nu house.  I remember the days of road tripping up to see The Who in concert in Seattle and the fun times we had just hanging around the fraternity house.   I remember when Kevin tried to walk on the football team at University Of Oregon and  gave it his best, always gave 110%.  Kevin was the best kind of friend you could have and would do anything for you.  He will be missed dearly.

Mary, my deepest sympathy goes out to you and Kevin's family.  In the three years I knew Kevin, he was the one person that I sought out for help and guidance at our firm. He was always kind and insightful. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

First my wife Susie and I would like to send our heart felt condolences to Kevin's family and Mary for their loss. Kevin will be truly missed. Kevin was one of the first managers I met when I joined National. He offered to take me to lunch where he was kind enough to give me a little insight into the firm and all it's characters. It was information that helped me a great deal. Kevin also took me to my one and only Mariners game in the Kingdome. I will always remember those two times the most. He had a smile that could always cheer you up and he was always there if you needed help. I will miss that laughter he had, and I will miss the person he had yet to become.

Kevin was a genuinely nice person. Truly "one in a million." Equally equipped to discuss Existential Philosophy or Led Zeppelin's third album. I cannot help but think about the various conversations we'd had on the meaning of life and other spiritual topics. I guess that Kevin now knows the answers.

Linda and I wish to express our deepest sympathy over Kevin's passing. I have worked with Kevin for 13 years and have watched both the good and bad times,  and I think have helped him when necessary. I loved his humor and the discussions we had over business and world matters. Kevin will be deeply missed by Linda and myself.

First, my sympathies to the Smith family & Mary for their loss. When I was in the mailroom, Kevin asked a favor of me. He asked if I could pack some personal items of his and have them sent to Arizona.  When he returned from his trip, he gave me a restaurant coupon, oysters if I remember right.  This story may seem silly, but Kevin did not have to give me that coupon.  He said hi to me everyday, regardless of how his day was going, and I would have gladly done anything for him.

Rest in peace Kevin and I hope to see you down the road someday.

This is an email tribute to Kevin that I sent to my friends and family:

Dear Friends and Family,
I have very recently had as some of you may already know another tragic reminder of just how fragile life can be and the importance of treasuring every moment;  finding joy in the beauty of every day and, most importantly, freely and frequently expressing your love to family and friends.
 
My friend and former boss at National Securities died in his sleep Thursday morning. He was 38 years old. Kevin leaves behind two young children who adored their Daddy and his beautiful fiancÃ©e, Mary, who was the light of his life. 
 
Kevin could sometimes be exasperating, with a quick temper that was equally quick to diffuse and an ego that was like an overblown balloon...inflated, but reduced to almost nothing by a look, word or perceived slight from a loved one, respected colleague or valued friend. He wore his heart on his sleeve and often allowed insignificant events to overpower him emotionally.
 
He was extraordinarily bright and had a memory that astounded all who knew him. He could tell stories that would make you laugh until your stomach ached or that would make you cry in shared psychological pain. His eyes misted with love whenever he spoke of his children, Caitlin and Cole, and his fiancÃ©e, Mary. 
 
Kevin was generous to a fault and was often over-indulgent with a tendency to place excessive value on monetary success and material acquisitions. He was charismatic and had a "larger than life" presence that drew clients like moths to a light bulb...yet he never truly believed he deserved the respect and admiration they accorded him.
 
Kevin could simultaneously be an insecure little boy and a confident, competent professional man. He profoundly touched all who knew him well...in ways that are too complex to express in words. He will be more deeply missed than he could ever have imagined. The place he occupied in our hearts will never be filled and our grief and sorrow at his passing will, while lessening over time, always be with us.
 
I never told Kevin how much I cared about him. I never told him that I appreciated his friendship and respected his intellect, passion and love for his family. I never told him that I loved him. 
 
I regret those times that I listened to his words and not his heart. I regret that I didn't help him re-direct his boundless energy to the things that truly mattered...the wealth that he already possessed in the form of his children, his fiancÃ©e, his friends and his family and the simple joys of living.
 
In the end, it's not the value of your portfolio, the type of car you drive, the size of the house you live in or the number of digits in your checkbook balance that matters. It's the love you give and the love that you receive that will be your legacy. 
 
Today, in tribute to Kevin Smith, I am sending this message to tell you how much I love each of you and how important you are to me. Please, in turn, share your love with those precious people with whom you share your life.
