Larry Kolloen was a rock of stability for his family and his community. He contributed time and donations to his church. He served his country in the armed forces and as a federal employee. And he was a caring husband, supportive parent, and loving grandparent.
Lawrence Campbell Kolloen was born March 22, 1947, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle to Erling and Muriel Kolloen. He spent his childhood in Wallingford, where much of his extended family lived as well. He attended McDonald Elementary, Hamilton Junior High, and Lincoln High School (Class of 1965).
His happiest childhood memories were from summers at the family cabin on Camano Island, beachcombing and swimming.
Larry entered the Army after high school, serving in the 268th Signal Corps. He served two years in Vietnam.
After returning to the U.S., he graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Architecture. He also became very involved with Keystone Congregational Church and, later, with University Congregational Church.
Larry spent 32 years with the United States Postal Service, retiring as an architect/engineer. He spent many nights after work hours planning projects on the home drafting table he built.
He liked to stay active--some of his favorite pursuits through the years included tennis, running, and hiking. Later in life, bicycling became his passion; in retirement, he'd ride 20-30 miles every day.
Larry was also a talented photographer; in addition to thousands of casual photographs of his family, he created photographic collages with flower petals and fruit. He took up watercolor painting after retirement.
Larry was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in 2015. As his mental capacity declined, he accepted his diminishing independence and the help of his caregivers with gratitude. Frustration, when it came, never lasted long.
After a long day of goodbyes with his family, Larry passed away in his sleep on July 23, 2017.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Reeves, three children, Seth Kolloen, Jessica Dietz, and Meredith Dunne, four grandchildren, Nikayla, Audrey, Memphis, and Savannah, and a brother, Peter Kolloen.
A private burial has already been held. A service will be held Sunday, August 13, at University Congregational Church, at 2pm.
