My mother, Leah deRoulet was born in Chicago on April 18th, 1936 at the height of the depression. 
Her mother, Mae Feld, was already a mature woman by then at 36, and my mother had an older half brother and half sister from Grandma Feld’s first marriage. 
Her half brother, Stan Rose, was 18 years older than my mother and was about to join the US Navy just as my mother was born. 
He went on to fight in the Pacific in World War 2 and later built a publishing empire in Kansas City called Sun Publications. 

Mom’s half sister, Gertrude was at least 10 years older and went on to marry twice and have a lovely daughter named Maxine.

Mae Feld passed away in Kansas City in 1976 and I attended her funeral.
Aunt Gertrude passed away in the mid 70’s and Uncle Stan in the early 2000’s.
Now Mom joins them all in heaven.

Skiing and my amazing mother
My awesome mother did this all by herself. I remember her packing the car in the afternoon and driving herself up to Snoqualmie Pass to take her weekday ski lessons at night. 
She even had to put chains on her car by herself, and one time, the chains came off and she tore up the rear wheel wells of her new 1967 Plymouth Barracuda coup.

But this did not stop my mother who was determined to learn to ski.
And she did. Two years later, she took Jeffrey and I up to Snoqualmie Pass to learn to ski.
I was terrible, and still remember falling, and bitching, crying, fussing, swearing and steaming.
All of these awesome and memorable experiences would have never been possible without my mother learning to ski by herself some 55 years ago.
My mother was always amazing and this is just another example of how strong willed, free willed and determined she always was and still is today.

Thank you MOM for putting up with my temper tantrums on the ski slopes.
You are the best!
