The one that kept us together in good times and difficult times. She offered constant support and generosity to everyone who crossed her path. Better known as “Lily”, she was the social butterfly who made friends easily and forged a lot of lasting friendships over the decades, leaving behind cherished memories that those who knew her will carry forever.
Lilia was born the 1st of 3 children to the late Teodorico Solis and the late Marta Queñano in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, Philippines.
In 1965, Lilia fell in love with Angel Salangad, a Master Sergeant in the Philippine Armed Forces. Together they had two children, Sherman and Mildred, and one granddaughter, Sierra.
Lilia graduated from the University of Pangasinan and was a schoolteacher in the Philippines. In 1970, she emigrated to the United States with a teaching visa. Unable to find a teaching position when she arrived in Seattle, Washington, she translated her skills as a house maid and nursing home attendant and other various cleaning jobs the next couple of years. At night, she studied business classes at the local community college.
In 1972, she landed an accounts payable/contracting position at the University of Washington Purchasing Department. She worked there 25 years and retired in 1997.
Once she became a United States citizen, she worked tirelessly to petition her husband and two young children (ages 6 and 5, respectively) to migrate to the States. She successfully brought them over in 1972. They settled in Seattle, and they have lived there exclusively for over 50 years.
She enjoyed cooking and hosting and going to social parties and attending all types of events from family weddings to Pinoy soirées in Canada, California and of course, Seattle and most of the western Washington cities. No matter what party her family attended, she always brought one of many of her favorite homemade Filipino foods: lumpia, pansit, leche flan, and bibingka were a few of the dishes she made for family and friends.
When she retired, she traveled extensively to her native Philippines and explored several countries, including Canada, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, and Israel, often for Catholic pilgrimages that deepened her faith alongside her loving husband, Angel.
Her warm smile, her gentle kindness, and her ability to make people feel welcome and comfortable will be missed by many. We honor her life and the happiness she brought to those around her.
