Lourdes Ibay Yapjoco, 86, passed away on April 1, 2022 with her husband and children by her
side. Lourdes was born to Clara (Sebastian) and Roman Ibay Sr. on October 12, 1935 in
Manila, Philippines. After finishing high school at UST (University of Santo Thomas), she
studied accounting for two years from the Philippine College of Commerce and then transferred
to the University of the East where she graduated in 1957 with a Bachelors in Business Administration and later became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). After finishing college, she worked for the US Veterans in Manila where she met many lifelong friends.
Better known to her family and friends as “Ding”, she had an infectious smile that won the heart
of her surviving husband of 60 years, Domingo Yapjoco, Jr. Lourdes and Domingo married on
April 29, 1961 and had five surviving children — two sons Denis (wife Amelia) and Alex (wife
Kate), and three daughters, Christine (husband Paul Kwan), Maria (husband Mel)
Buenaventura, and Susan (husband Paul) Hogben. She had fifteen surviving grandchildren —
Clarisse, Brigitte, Justin and Esther Yapjoco, Christian Yapjoco and Kaitlyn (husband Chris)
Woo, Audrey and Beatrice Kwan, Elaina, Gianna, Vincente, Lorenzo and Nadia Buenaventura,
Ailsa and Lucas Hogben, and one great granddaughter, Lila Woo.
Lourdes and her family moved to Canada in 1971 with the hope of providing a more promising
life for her children. She worked as a bookkeeper in Vancouver, British Columbia, then later
immigrated to the United States for better opportunities. She has been a resident of the Seattle
area for 38 years and retired from her final post at the City of Seattle Municipal Court in 2011.
She is remembered by many as a kind, loving, gentle person who always wore a constant smile.
She was an amazing pianist, loved dancing, playing mahjong, and traveling — especially taking
cruises with family and friends. Welcoming everyone into her home, she made sure nobody left
hungry, a filipino trait that is cherished by everyone that knew her.
Lourdes was preceded in death by her parents, brother Roman Ibay Jr., brothers-in-law Arturo Tolentino, Regino Romero, Eric Yapjoco, Louie Ange and sister-in-law Susan Yapjoco. She is survived by her
brother Manuel Ibay, brother-in-law Albert Yapjoco, sisters Coromina Tolentino and Rizalina Romero, sisters-in-law Carmen and Rose Ibay, Victoria Ange, Teresita Yapjoco and twenty-three nephews and nieces.
