“Love each other and keep looking up”
This was the theme of Lyle’s life.
After a very cold winter, Spring was coming to North Dakota when Lyle was born on February 25, 1929. His loving parents, and brother, Robert, welcomed him into their family in Watford City, ND; this is where Lyle grew up. He was known as both an outstanding basketball player and musician in High School.
Lyle proceed to get his BA and MA degrees in music and went on to teach music for many years at all levels, including 8 years at Seattle Pacific University. He later became a school Principal at T.T. Minor, Bryant, and Rogers Elementary Schools in Seattle. T.T. Minor’s Lyle G. Staley Learning Resource Center, named in his honor, continues to be a legacy recognizing the impact Lyle made in the Seattle school system.
He was married to his beloved wife, Shelley, for 68 years. They met when they were both singing in the College Choir at Minot State University. Lyle always said it was love at first sight. They built a meaningful life together centered on their family, faith and service to their community.
They had four beautiful, loving children – Timothy Lyle, Kristen Jane, Karen Jean and Rob Edward. Their hearts were broken when Robbie passed away in 2019. They have five wonderful Grandchildren and two sweet Great Grandchildren. His family and friends will remember Lyle as a quiet man with a loud, sharp mind and they will miss his smile, humor, loyalty, endless support and the comfort he provided to all those around him.
