On December 5, 2021, Heaven gained an angel. We lost our beloved mom, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. Mamie Wong held a deep faith in God. She was the matriarch of her family, whom she adored and loved unconditionally, and in the company of her church family and countless friends. Mamie will hold a special place in the hearts of all those who knew her.
Mamie was born in Wilmington, North Carolina on August 7, 1924, where she lived with her parents, younger sister May, and older brother Kai. At age 10, Mamie’s mother took Mamie and May back to the family village in China where she later married Lee Wong at age 16.
During the Japanese invasion of WWII, Mamie, then 22, fled China seeking safety back in the United States. Mamie and Lee lived, worked, and raised their four children—Jackie, Mike, Bobbie, and Tim—at the “China Clipper” restaurant in Raymond, Washington where they learned the restaurant business and handled operations for over 45 years.
Lee and Mamie retired to Seattle, Washington to live closer to their children and grandchildren and became members of Seattle Chinese Alliance Church and. After Lee’s passing in 2002, Mamie continued to live each day through faith and gave her family an abundant, growing love that we didn’t know existed nor needed. Mamie was welcoming, selfless, and optimistic; her presence was peaceful, healing, and uplifting.
Although living without Mamie will be our biggest heartache, we hold our memories and her spirit in our hearts forever. We feel peace knowing she lives eternally, whole, and reunited with Lee, her grandson Adam who passed in 2009, and her sister May who passed only two months prior.
Mamie is survived by her children: Jackie Kite, Mike Wong, Bobbie Beatty (Wyley), and Tim Wong (Becky); grandchildren: Abbie and Lauren Kite, Matthew Beatty (Renae), Annie Tookey (Andrew), Erik Wong (Lauren), Ryan Wong (Christy), and Natalie Wong; and great-grandchildren: Emmett Beatty and Audrey and Adam Tookey.
A memorial service will be held on January 29, 2022 from 2 – 4 p.m. at Seattle Chinese Alliance Church: 2803 S Orcas Seattle, WA 98108. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church or the Locke Family Association c/o 333 Lakeside Ave S Seattle, WA 98144.
