Marit Elizabeth Highfill Turner passed away unexpectedly on June 26, 2026. She leaves behind a family, circle of friends, and community who are better because they knew her.
Born on October 10, 1953, in Virginia, Marit moved with her family to Ballard, Washington, at a young age. It was there that she built a life rooted in family, faith, friendship, and community.
Marit never met a stranger. She welcomed everyone with open arms and formed opinions with her heart, not preconceived notions. Whether you had known her for years or were just introduced, she had a way of making you feel like you belonged.
There are few guarantees in life, but one was that Marit Turner would arrive fashionably late, convinced Highway 99 was the faster route, and greeted everyone with a smile that made the wait worthwhile.
She was a devoted mother to four children: Britt Abhold, Skylar Turner, Reece Turner, and Bailey Turner. Her greatest joy was being Mor Mor and Far Mor to her six cherished grandchildren: Wesley, Layne, Magdalena, Rorik, Harlow, and Piper. She is also survived by her brother Andrew Highfill, sister-in-law Teresa McNiel-Highfill, daughter-in-laws Liza Turner and Madeline Gagner.
Marit found her utmost happiness in the people she loved. Whether gathered around a table, celebrating life’s milestones, singing in the church choir, or cheering from the bleachers, she showed up wholeheartedly. Fiercely competitive and endlessly encouraging; she made sure her loved ones always knew they had someone in their corner.
May we honor Marit by living as she did; with open arms, an open heart, cheering loudly for the people we love, and believing there is always room for one more at the table. In doing so, we carry forward the kindness, joy, and sense of community she gave so freely.
