Throughout his life, Mark worked as a commercial fisherman off Kodiak Island in Alaska, as a yacht renovator and watchman, and as a commercial delivery driver for parts manufacturing companies. He served in the U.S. Navy as a boatswain's mate from 1982 to 1985
Mark was a boat aficionado, kayaker, avid ham radio operator, carpenter, kayak designer/builder, folk guitar musician, and an artist who drew and also created unique paper and wood crafts for his personal amusement and the children of his family and friends. He loved puns and practical jokes, which meant that he often was not appreciated for the truly genuine and tender man that he was. He will be greatly missed by those who were fortunate to know him.
He is preceded in death by his father Chester Gerhardt. Carlson who died in Lake Union when Mark was nine years old; his mother Virginia (Popplewell) Burke who passed away in 1991; and his stepfather Roger Burke in 2013.
He is survived by his two sisters: Gerri Davis (and brother-in-law Harry Davis) of Galt, CA, and Kathleen Drabek of Kodiak, AK; his nieces Sabrina Agtarap of Everett, WA, Ginger Austin of Bow, WA, Shawn Austin of Edmonds, WA, Janine Austin of Bellingham, WA, and Alisha Drabek of Kodiak, AK; and many cousins, grand nieces and grand nephews.
