
Marsha Mary Garcia (Kukáan), 87, passed away on July 13, 2012, at Columbia Lutheran Nursing Home in Seattle, WA. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday July 21st at St Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral 400 Yale Ave N Seattle WA 98109, followed by a procession to Washelli Cemetery where she will be laid to rest. A Tlingit ceremony & potluck dinner will begin at 3pm, Daybreak Star 3801 W Government Way Seattle, WA 98199.
Marsha (Malutin) was born January 28, 1925 in Karluk, AK. She attended school at Mount Edgecumbe in Sitka, AK and soon after moved to Juenau, AK to take a job as a cannery worker. In Juneau, Marsha married the son of Martha Barril, John Garcia Jr. and as an Aleut was adopted into the Tlingit Tribe & Kaagwaantaan clan. She was given the name Kukáan. She was a member of the Alaska Native Sisterhood for many years.
Marsha was referred to as "Matushka Maria" when her husband John was ordained a deacon at St Nicholas Orthodox Church in Juneau where she lived for over 30yrs. She moved to Seattle and was a member of St. Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral. Marsha was very active in the Orthodox Church all her life and sang in the choir from the time she was a little girl right up until her eyesight & health declined.
Marsha is survived by her son John Garcia III, daughter Linda Mora, her grandchildren Alexandra Garcia, Callista Garcia, Felicia Mora, Davita Mora and four great grandchildren. Also many nephews, nieces and people that loving knew her as "ma".
Masha was preceded in death by her husband John Garcia Jr., sister Olga Malutin and brother Nick Malutin.
