Mary, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 20th, surrounded by her family. Survived by daughters Holly Mangold and Sandra Hixson (Wayne), granddaughters Jennifer Waugh (Max) and Alicia Hixson, great-grandson Tasman Waugh, niece Holly Wells and cousins David Cameron (BC), Jamie Cameron and Susan Cameron Hunt, all living in British Columbia. Mary was preceded in death by Hollis Mangold, her husband of 44 years and sisters Margaret “Olga” Sjursen and Helen “Bedo” Havercroft.
Mary was born May 29th, 1930 in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, to Jim and Suzanne Sim. Mary grew up in Prince Rupert in a large extended family. The family moved to Seattle in 1949. Mary became a secretary and worked in doctors’ offices and at Darigold Milk. Later she became a secretary at the Bilingual Orientation Center in the Seattle School District, where worked for 28 years. The BOC is where students from around the world first come to learn and speak English before entering the regular school system. She loved the kids and learning about their cultures, and they loved Miss Mary as well.
Mary adored dogs, especially her fur babies Scamp and Rusty. She was a strong advocate for shelter animals and a long-time supporter and contributor to the Seattle Animal Shelter and the Humane Society. Mary was a member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church. Mary will be missed by her family and friends for her kindly and generous disposition, her excitement and joy at the holidays, and her love of family.
Memorial services for the family will be held at Evergreen-Washelli and a Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date. Remembrances in the name of Mary Mangold may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
