Muriel was born on October 15, 1917 in Toronto, Canada to the late Samuel Lefkowitz and Sophie Barsman, and was the devoted sister to the late Manuel Lefkowitz of Los Angeles. Muriel’s musical talents were recognized early, and she was awarded a full violin scholarship to attend the Eastman School of music. After her graduation, Muriel enjoyed a successful career as a professional violinist, first in Buffalo NY and later in Baltimore and Washington DC.
Muriel married the late Dr. Paul Selig Rubin, a Radiologist, with whom she raised her family of four children: the late Pamela Jean Rubin, Darryl Ellis Rubin, Jeremy Bennett Rubin, and Daniel Lee Rubin. Muriel's children were all born at Johns Hopkins where Paul completed his medical training, after which the family moved to Los Angeles before ultimately settling in Beverly Hills. Muriel's outgoing personality and positive attitude were greatly appreciated by her numerous friends, many of whom she met through her participation in the Young Musician's Foundation, an organization which Muriel actively contributed to over many years in support of her lifelong love of music. Muriel was a truly extraordinary mother, a pillar of strength who held the family together during challenging and uncertain times. She provided her family with boundless love, devoted her life to her family’s needs, sacrificed greatly to ensure her children received superb educations, and derived enormous satisfaction from her children’s successes. Muriel was also a loving and devoted daughter to her mother, Sophie, throughout her life and during Sophie's final years.
In her later years Muriel relocated to Mountain View CA, then to Bellevue WA, and finally to Kirkland WA in order to live closer to her children. Everyone who met Muriel in those years recognized what a special person she was because of her extraordinarily kind heart and extremely sweet and appreciative disposition. Muriel was a source of constant inspiration to her family, to her care givers, and to her doctors as she courageously recovered from numerous serious illnesses, lengthy and often painful hospitalizations, and repeatedly overcame seemingly insurmountable hurdles and odds, all so she could recover and be with her children just a little while longer in order to continue to give them her love and enjoy their successes.
Muriel will be dearly missed and her memory will be cherished by her sons Jeremy, Daniel, and Darryl, as well as by her son-in-law Jim DeMartino and daughter-in-law Terry Desser.
A private memorial service will be held at Acacia Memorial Park, Seattle, WA.
Arrangements under the direction of Bleitz Funeral Home, Seattle, WA.
