Of the eleven children in his family, nine survived to adulthood following the early passing of his eldest brother and younger sister. He grew up as the sole brother alongside nine sisters. His grandfather served as a Mandarin official during the Nguyễn Dynasty. His father, Mr. Nguyễn Viết Tú, was a civil servant in the national railway and power sectors, and later worked as an engineer. His mother, Mrs. Diệp Thị Ngành, was from a Chinese merchant family who settled in Vietnam.
During his early childhood, Mr. Nguyễn lived with his family in Quảng Trị. His family later relocated to Qui Nhơn to pursue business opportunities, where he attended Cường Để Secondary School. For high school, he moved to Saigon to complete his secondary education at Chu Văn An High School.
Military Service and Career Amidst the Vietnam War, Mr. Nguyễn entered the Thủ Đức Officer Academy. He graduated with the rank of Lieutenant while concurrently studying for a law degree from the Saigon Faculty of Law. Following his commission, he returned to Qui Nhơn to establish his family and career.
His military career included combat engagement at Phước Hải and subsequent service as a finance officer at the Qui Nhơn military installation. Throughout his service, he demonstrated deep compassion for impoverished civilians and subordinate soldiers, consistently extending assistance to those in need despite his own modest financial resources.
Family Life and Resettlement Mr. Nguyễn and his first wife raised six children (two sons and four daughters) in Qui Nhơn until 1975, when the family relocated to Saigon.
Following a period of re-education after the war, Mr. Nguyễn opened a modest business and worked at the International Quarantine Station. In 1979, the family departed Vietnam via boat, enduring an arduous journey to resettle in the United States.
In America, Mr. Nguyễn devoted himself to building a new life and providing support for his children. He was passionate about reconnecting and supporting fellow veterans of the Republic of Vietnam Military Forces who arrived in subsequent years.
Devotion to Family and Legacy A deeply filial son, Mr. Nguyễn cared for his mother in her final months. Following her passing, he brought his elderly father to reside with him in Washington State and cared for him many years.
Spirituality Mr. Nguyễn found God later in life and embraced the Catholic faith. He was baptized as Joseph in 2013.
Mr. Nguyễn is survived by his spouse, siblings, children, and grandchildren, who honor his memory with deep sorrow and affection.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
