Paul's humble start while growing up in the Yesler Terrace Transitional Housing provided a foundation for his successes later in life. He received his education in the Seattle Public Schools (Bailey Gatzert & Washington). While attending James A. Garfield High School, Paul played varsity basketball under coach Jack Scott (he was proud to have made the team as a Freshman). He later transferred and graduated from Cleveland High School in 1969. While attending Seattle Community College, Paul played on the basketball team under coach Robert Johnson.
Paul began his professional career with the King County Juvenile Detention Center as a Detention Officer. He worked with troubled youth and served as mentor to the young men and women he came in contact with during his 16 -year tenure. During his time with King County, he began to pursue his passion for real estate and went on to own and operate Paul A. Bascomb & Associates Real Estate Services in Seattle's Central District for over 35 years.
During this time, Paul began to make his mark in the business and political community in Seattle. He served as President of the Seattle Jaycees, President of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) - Seattle Chapter, Board Member and Chair of the Disciplinary Committee of the Northwest Multiple Listing Service. Paul was also Chair of the Seattle Police Department's African American Advisory Council, as well as East Precinct Crime Prevention Coalition board member. Paul also attended the FBI Seattle Division Citizen's Academy. Through his tireless community advocacy, Paul was awarded the prestigious FBI Director's Community Leadership Award which was presented to him in Washington, DC. Paul took this opportunity to take his family to the White House for a private tour. Paul's love for his community encouraged him to seek representation on the Seattle City Council. His bid was another stepping stone for him to continue the fight to keep his community moving forward and enriched with diversity.
Paul was an avid basketball player and fan and was known around the city for his mean jump shot. He had many accomplishments during his life. The most precious to Paul was his family, specifically his daughters. He ensured they had many life experiences even though most came with a "lesson". It was important that his girls could take care of themselves, but most of all that they loved and supported one another no matter what. The bond they share is attributed solely to the example he set in keeping family together and loving one another through good and bad times.
Besides his parents, Paul is preceded in death by siblings Wesberry Bascomb, Audrey Carter, Camellia Bascomb (aka Yoko Tani) and Erdman Bascomb. Paul is survived by his loving daughters: Bridgett Bascomb-Scott and Tiffany Bascomb (Marsha); Nicole Bascomb-Aaron and Kyana Bascomb (Linda) and Rachel Bascomb (Cassandra). His grandchildren: Christopher Scott, Jr, Niaya Aaron, Sanyh Aaron, and Symirah Aaron, along with step sons Steven and Cedric Shelton. His siblings: F. Deanna Franklin, Winnifred Allen, Frank Bascomb, Jr., Gordon Bascomb, Cleo Fitzgerald Williams, Cynthia Jones, Wayne Bascomb, Stanley Bascomb and Angela Bascomb-Martin as well as his aunts, loving nieces and nephews, cousins, additional family and friends.
Paul Augustus Bascomb was an exceptional and loving father, an outstanding and concerned brother, a proud and engaging uncle, a good friend and dedicated mentor. His voice, guidance, perspective and sincere caring will all be deeply missed.
