May 20, 1960 to February 18, 2015
It is with a profound grief that we write about the passing of Peter-loving husband, adoring father, devoted son, brother and friend. Peter's life was one of dedication and love, and he positively impacted the lives of countless people during his short 54 years on this earth. There are no words to describe the enormous void he will leave behind in his family, his community, and his extensive circle of friends and associates.
Peter joined the angels on Wednesday, February 18th, after unexpectedly suffering a heart attack while walking his dog in the neighborhood he loved. He will be remembered for his love of life and sense of humor, his dedication to family and friends, and his defining characteristics of integrity and loyalty.
He leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Anne Marie McBroom, and two sons: Benjamin and Jonathan. Peter is survived by his mother, Marlene M. Flanagan, his sister Maria (Mark Vaillancourt), and brothers Malachi (Lissie), Joseph (Margaret), and Anthony (Caterina). Uncle Peter will be forever missed by his eleven nieces and nephews: Jack, William, Larkin, Emma, Meg, John, Lucy, Vincent, Marley, Nina and Anthony. He is predeceased by his father Dr. Malachi Flanagan, of Chicago. Peter was a man who lived his convictions with unwavering faith and integrity, and his steadfast commitment to his family and those he loved made him a role model to everyone.
Peter was born and raised in Winnetka, Illinois, the second son in a large and loving Irish-Italian family. He played and coached football, and was an avid sports fan throughout his life. He graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, and moved to Bozeman, Montana, to work and live in the gorgeous Big Sky landscape he had fallen in love with. It was there that he met the love of his life, Anne; they were married in 1987 and began their life together in Montana. Together, they discovered the Seattle area in the early 1990's, which became their permanent home. Peter and Anne lived in the Blue Ridge neighborhood, north of Ballard, where they built a life for their growing family surrounded by countless friends and neighbors.
Peter worked in the investment and insurance professions. He opened and operated the Allstate office in Ballard, which was within walking distance from his home. Peter was an active member of St. John Parish, and had been a frequent volunteer in school and parish activities for twenty years. He instigated and coached the St. John Chess Club, and was a passionate Little League coach for both of his sons. Most recently he was a rabid Braves fan as he cheered on his sons in their sporting pursuits at Bishop Blanchet High School. No father was ever prouder or more involved in the lives of his children, and the communities of St. John the Evangelist and Bishop Blanchet High School have lost a most beloved and loyal supporter.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Peter's memory to the endowment funds at St. John School and Bishop Blanchet High School. Funeral Mass to be held at St. John Parish on Friday, February 27th, at 11 AM.
