Peter Karl Unger, Jr., an Alutiiq man whose life bridged the traditions of Alaska's coastal villages with a distinguished career across America, passed away peacefully in his home on December 19, 2025, at the age of 83.
Born in Old Afognak Village, Alaska, Peter was raised on Afognak and Kodiak Islands, where the rhythms of subsistence life and the call of the sea shaped his early years. He became the first in his family to graduate high school, earning his diploma from San Lorenzo High School in Hayward, California — a milestone that reflected his determination and opened doors to a lifetime of skilled craftsmanship.
Peter's career as a painter and finisher took him from the fishing villages of Kodiak to sites across Alaska and both coasts of the United States. After joining the painters' union and completing a two-and-a-half-year apprenticeship, he became a journeyman known for his meticulous work and unwavering pride in his craft. Following the devastating 1964 Good Friday earthquake and tsunami that destroyed much of Kodiak City, Peter and his brother Ralph returned home to help rebuild their community, painting newly constructed buildings that would house a recovering city.
The pinnacle of Peter's professional life was his 20-plus-year career with the U.S. Public Health Service at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, where he served as a maintenance painter and finisher in both the old and current hospital facilities. His colleagues knew him as someone who would take on any job with pride and complete it with exceptional quality and speed — a reputation that spoke to both his skill and his character.
Peter's fondest childhood memories were of playing outdoors with his siblings and friends on Afognak and in Kodiak. As an adult, his heart belonged to the water, and his most treasured times were spent on boats with his buddies and fishing with his son Ronald, in Seward aboard his 19-and-a-half-foot Glasply, the Sea Doll. Throughout his life, Peter found joy in simple pleasures: country music dancing with his ex-wife Carolyn, archery as a member of a bowmen's club, watching action and old western movies, and savoring his father's pirok (Alaskan salmon pie). Throughout his life, Peter was a trusted and reliable best friend to several, his loyalty and humor a gift to those fortunate enough to know him well. Yet when asked what he was most proud of in his life, Peter would speak of something more profound than any career achievement: providing a loving and stable home for his family.
After retirement, Peter lived in Anchorage, Alaska; Everett, Washington; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and Sun City West, Arizona, carrying with him the strength of his Alutiiq heritage and the connections forged through a lifetime of honest work and dedication to family and friendship.
Peter is survived by his son, Ronald Unger; his ex-wife and roommate, Carolyn Unger; his daughter, Roberta Aga; his daughter-in-law, Fabiula Unger; his grandchildren, Sofia Unger, Stella Unger, Scarlett Unger, Steven Patterson, Shane Muller, and Hali Patterson; his step-son Dennis Cessna; his brothers, Ralph Unger and Michael Unger; and his sisters, Dolly Walls and Frances Hall.
He was preceded in death by his father, Peter Unger, Sr.; his mother, Florence Malutin; his brothers, Harold Unger and Fred Unger; his sister, Eleanor Hilligas; and his stepson, David Norton.
Committal services will be held 10:00 am PT, Sunday, March 1st, 2026, at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home & Cemetery, 11111 Aurora Ave N, Seattle, WA 98133. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Koniag Education Foundation at www.koniageducation.org.
A life well lived, a legacy of craftsmanship, and a devotion to family and friendship — Peter Karl Unger, Jr. will be remembered with love and respect by all who knew him.
