She is survived by her beloved husband of 78 years, Earl; her son, Earl Jr. “Skip” (Linda); her daughter, Suzanne “Suzie” (John) Porter; her sister, Sharon Kay Stone; her grandchildren, Sandi Linzbach (Rich), Stacy Boyd (Brady), Kimi Bartholomew (David), John Richard Porter III, Jacob Meldahl, and six great-grandchildren. Phyllis was preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah “Debbie” DeWitt; parents Alice and Phillip Wick; brother Douglas Wick; and her sisters, Betty Lou Carleson, DePhae Craig, and Arlene Nabseth.
Growing up in Ballard, she was a 1946 graduate of Ballard High School. Phyllis married Earl in 1947 shortly after his return from serving in the Navy, during WWII. She was a stay-at-home mom raising her son and two daughters until all three were in school. She then went to work in the bakery department at Safeway, eventually becoming a cake decorator. She retired from Safeway in 1990 with an abundance of new friends.
Phyllis loved family events, especially during the holidays when the family would get together and give thanks on Thanksgiving, and celebrate Christmas. She also loved when her grandchildren would pop in for visits and gather around her kitchen table. She was an avid reader and loved her annual vacations to Hawaii. She was known for enjoying her favorite candy “chocolate”, but jellybeans were always plentiful in the house, which she was eager to share.
Despite a stroke in 2003, Phyllis maintained her sense of humor, was quick to smile, and had an infectious laughter that would invite others to join in.
Mom, we will all hold you in our hearts until you hold us in heaven.
She will forever be missed. May her legacy of LOVE continue to inspire us all.
