Pierre was born in St Louis, Mo to Mary Hale and Oliver Humphrey (who preceded him in death). He is the fifth child of six children. Oliver, Jr (who preceded him in death); Ruth Margaret, Sertello, Ralph and Peony. Pierre's family moved to Chicago, IL when he was 4 or 5. As a teenager he attended Wendell Phillips High School. He was very active in the Science and Slide Rule Clubs. He was also very active in the ROTC and Student Council and was accepted into the Upward Bound Program at Loyola University where he vigorously participated in debate teams. Pierre was active in the Catholic Church, he went to Sunday school, was baptized and was an altar boy and sang in the choir.
Pierre was accepted after graduation to Wartburg College in Waverly, IA where he met his future wife Patricia Lynn Branch. After leaving Wartburg College, Pierre decided to enter the military. He completed basic training at Fort Polk, LA, was then transferred to Fort Sill, OK where he was trained as an artillery surveyor and was later stationed at Fort Lewis, WA for the duration of his enlistment. He later married Patricia on December 24, 1972. The marriage produced two sons Pierre Domino Humphrey, II and Nicholas Tyrone Humphrey. During this time, he went to Seattle Central Community College and received his Associate of Arts degree. Pierre had a great love for astronomy, chess, science, mathematics and philosophy (and his comic books). He stressed education to both of his sons and was a force to contend with when it came to studying. One has a Bachelor of Arts and the other has a Masters in Science.
While working at the University of Washington, he was an advocate for immigrants who did not know how to work with the system. He was a fighter and worked with union stewards to preserve the rights of others. It goes to say that management did not like him and tried to fire him several times, he managed to keep his job up until he could no longer work.
Pierre leaves behind his wife Patricia of 43 years, sons Pierre II and Nicholas, two grandchildren, Melis Aria (Pierre II) and Bruce Douglas (Nicholas); Mary, his mother, his siblings, and an array of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Pierre was a very strong willed man, intelligent and analytical, funny and loved. He liked the arts: ballets, plays, operas and listened to jazz and classical music and watched DVDs with his wife. He will be truly missed.
God bless you and may you rest in peace, Pierre.
Arrangements entrusted to Bleitz Funeral Home of Seattle, Washington.
