Prince-Darrell Marquis Carroll, also known as “DJ”, was born in Seattle, Washington on April 23, 1992 to the union of Darrell L. Carroll and Zhalena Slaughter-Carroll. He was a highly active child, who loved sports and attending church with his family. DJ’s biggest childhood highlight was welcoming his little sister, AnZhane’ into the world, at the age of four years old.
His mother’s devotion, Auntie Angee’s guidance, and church family support taught him the true meaning of agape Love. Prince-Darrell's grandpa, Burnic Slaughter, being a long-time member of Emerald City Community Seventh-Day Adventist Church, helped him to establish solid roots and a timeless faith in God. By the age of ten years old, DJ found his love for track and field events. He placed 1st in the 400-meter, 800-meter, and 400-meter relay in Washington State, which garnered him two invitations to the U.S. Junior Olympics. As his sister AnZhane’ puts it, “track and field were his superpowers”.
By the age of fourteen, the Washington State Public School System labeled Prince-Darrell as problematic. As a result, his self-esteem and mental health suffered greatly. Despite many setbacks, he joined the Job Corps, which helped him achieve more than he thought was possible. It was a struggle. Life was not always kind to DJ. Through it all, he had a winning smile and a kind heart that harbored no bitterness towards anyone.
Blessed by fatherhood at age twenty, Prince-Darrell's daughter Katanae became his fullest joy! His love for her endures forever.
Prince-Darrell Marquis Carroll departed this life suddenly, on June 16, 2023, leaving to cherish his memory, loving mother Zhalena Mathis and stepfather Steadman Mathis; sisters AnZhane’ Slaughter, Erin Walker, Ellie Bratt, Samari Carroll, and brother DaSani Carroll; daughter Katanae Carroll; and a host of family and friends.
