Bob was a gentle, quiet soul, and a loyal and giving husband, brother and father. He was skilled at fixing things and keeping things running. He had a wry sense of humor – if you were paying attention. He enjoyed hiking, and camping, and hours spent patiently waiting to capture the perfect train picture at Mt. Index or the Blue Mountains in Eastern Oregon, often with his brother Bill. Favorite places to visit included Interbay, Carkeek Park and Richmond Beach.
Bob was born in Portland, Oregon and raised in LaGrande with his younger brother Bill. His mother Lola grew up on a farm in the Grand Ronde Valley, and his father Walter was a Union Pacific Railroad Engineer.
Bob, who always loved science and math, graduated from Oregon State University in 1954, with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, Bob was drafted into the Army and served our country for two years as a helicopter mechanic in Ft. Huachuca, Arizona.
Bob spent a year in Omaha, Nebraska, working for Union Pacific Railroad before starting his career with Boeing in 1957. During his 42-year career with Boeing, he spent time working on both military and later commercial divisions. Bob retired in 2000 at age 69.
Bob met Jean on a blind date in spring of ‘58. Bob and Jean were married in Seattle in 1960 and set up house in an apartment overlooking Lake Union. Russell was born in 1962, and when he was just a toddler, the young family moved into a new yellow house in North Seattle. Settling into their neighborhood, they became members of Woodland Park United Methodist Church. Two years later, Nola arrived. Bob and Jean spent 50 happy years in their house on 90th St.
In 2015, Bob, Jean and brother Bill moved, due to Bob’s Parkinson’s Disease, to Aegis of Shoreline Assisted Living, where Jean still resides.
Leaves behind his loving wife of 60+ years, Jean Hutchison;
Son Russell, daughter-in-law Carolyn, grandchildren Frances and Isabella;
Daughter Nola, son-in-law John, granddaughters Hailey and Victoria.
Preceded in death by younger brother, Walter (Bill) Hutchison.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Parkinson Disease Association, NW Chapter or Woodland Park United Methodist Church.
