He volunteered for the Washington State Guard and when WWII came along he joined the Naval Reserve, working at the Pier 91 engine shop. Assigned to a 110-foot subchaser (#1278) in the Navy fleet, his little ship hoisted the American flag on Easter Sunday 1945 at Blue Beach on Okinawa, then escorted troops to occupy Korea before returning home.
He was fortunate to find a life partner in Patricia (Bishop) who he married in 1947. THey started their family, then Bob was called back to serve in the Korean War, stationed in Astoria to reactivate ships, completing his military service.
In 1972, upon his retirement from Seattle Fire Department as Chief Engineer on the fireboat fleet, he and Pat moved to the home he helped build at Warm Beach.
Many hours of his retirement years were spent working on or traveling in his beloved Model A's. He eventually branched out into mid century Ramblers. He was never happier than when he had engine grease on his hands. He loved Warm Beach but searched out warmer winter destinations. The years spent snow-birding at the "Fountain of Youth Spa" in California desert may have contributed to his longevity. Bob passed away peacefully at the age of 102.
He is survived by: Patricia, his wife of 77 years; cherished children Steve, Shirley (Dan), Larry (Sandy); six beloved grandchildren Beth, John (Paulina), Adam, Samantha (Kevin), Stephanie (Kyle), Brooke (Chris); and six lively and loved great-grandchildren Avery, Cooper, Drew, Mary, Evan, Ruth. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Lou, a niece, and 10 nephews.
