Ruth (Hamlet) Schocken was born to Louis and Bertha (Nathan) Hamlet in Bielefeld, Germany on April 3, 1913. Ruth passed away on Friday, June 26th, after living a fulfilling life for 102 years. She grew up in a small town, largely untouched by the turbulent world around her, and was doted on as the youngest of 8. That world changed with the rise of the Nazis. She was one of the fortunate few, fleeing with her older sisters Ottilie and Thea in 1938. They settled in Seattle and began the life of immigrants. She married Henry Schocken, also a German immigrant, in 1941 and began married life running their men's clothing store in Renton, Wa. She had a good, long life, surrounded by a large and loving family, lived mainly in Seattle's Mt. Baker neighborhood. Ruth was a lifelong and active member of Herzl Ner Tamid Congregation and also active in the Jewish Club of Washington, an organization formed by and to support Jewish immigrants from Germany. She was very much the matriarch of our family, a true Eshet Chayil, a woman of valor, a life well lived through good times and bad. She is survived by her 3 children; Joe (Judy), Alan (Jane) and Barbara Lahav (Eli); 8 grandchildren, Kara (Jon) Aborn, Celina , Andy , Trea (Benjamin) Diament, Julie (Steve) Meade, Aaron, Ben (Tina) and Adam (Madeline) Lahav; and 9 beloved great grandchildren, Theo, Oliver, and Rafi Aborn; Toby, Nettie, and Madie Diament; Gabe Nova; Abe and Yve Ellis - Lahav. Warm thanks to Oma's wonderful caregivers Nancy Minyao, Rachel Stone, Becaley Elsie, and Meheret Abraham. Funeral services will be Monday, June 29, 3:00pm, at Butterworth Funeral Home, 520 W Raye St, Seattle, WA 98119. Remembrances are suggested to the Holocaust Center for Humanity (HolocaustCenterSeattle.org).
